4 Locksmith Tips to Regain Access to Your Car after Locking the Keys In or Out While at Home

A car lockout is both inconvenient and frustrating. It gets worse if it happens when you have no spare key to rescue the situation. Here are four tips from a locksmith to help you regain access to your car if a lockout happened while you are home.

1. Using a Coat Hanger Wire

Find a coat hanger wire and curve it on one end to make a small v-shaped hook. The hook should be small enough to go through the small gap between the top end of the door window at the ceiling and the car frame. Use a slight edge to create a gap between the window the rest of the car frame if there is no gap. Push the wire inside the door through this gap. When the hook reaches the door lock post found on the inside of the door, grasp the post securely with the hook. Pull the wire upwards to unlock the car.

2. Access From the Car Trunk

Some cars have a lever or tag on the trunk that allows access from the trunk when you lose or lock in the keys. Check if your vehicle has this lever by looking at the area near the trunk lock. This mark is usually yellow or orange. You can easily open the trunk of the car by pulling this lever or tag outwards. The trunk is locked with a latch on the inside, and pulling the lever releases the latch, thus opening it. Most people who know this trick will also keep a spare key in the trunk.

3. Buy a New Remote Opener

Modern cars mainly use digital keys to secure an electronic door. These key systems are safer as they prevent you from locking the keys inside. The electronic systems will not engage when the key is in the car.

If you have lost the gadget outside the car or for some reason it breaks, you will end up in a car lockout. In this scenario, you can buy a new remote opener to unlock the door. If not possible, use the previous methods to unlock the car.

You can also try using the override switch to start the car after losing or damaging the opener. This method is beneficial if the ignition system does not work due to a lost opener.

4. Find the Key Code

Car manufacturers assign a code to each car key. With this code, it is easy for most locksmiths to generate a new car key to use in a car lockout. For this reason, it is essential to write the code somewhere and leave it somewhere accessible at home.

If none of these methods work, your next best solution is to call in a locksmith. They will ensure that you are able to drive again. Contact a locksmith for more information.
